CHAPTER PROGRAMS

ALPHA MERIT GROUP COMMITTEE, INC.

The Alpha Merit Group Committee, Inc. was founded in 1964 by Bro. Earnest Wallace. Firmly committed to excellence in scholarship, the Alpha Merit Program began with eighty-five boys from predominately black schools in Dallas, TX. This program generated a tremendous amount of interest due to the financial challenges African Americans encountered when pursuing higher education.

Today, Alpha Merit has mentored over 20,000 boys and awarded over $175,000 in scholarships. The program is designed to enhance leadership skills, promote academic excellence, and broaden social skills of young males in grades 5-12 in the DFW area.

The Alpha Merit Group Committee, Inc. is affiliated with the Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the oldest African American Greek-letter organization in the United States of America and abroad. This group is comprised of professional men from various walks of life and plays various roles in the DFW community. The Alpha Merit Group Committee, Inc. co-sponsors college fairs, Project Alpha, and in school mentoring programs. The Group also sponsors a yearly weekend retreat for all Alpha Merit scholars. During this program four scholarships are awarded, based on scholastics, community service, and a 1,500 or more word essay on a topic selected by the Alpha Merit Board members.

C.C. RUSSEAU BLACK & GOLD GALA

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter and Alpha Merit Group Committee, Inc. hosted the annual C.C. Russeau Black and Gold Scholarship Gala. The annual event recognizes community leaders for their trailblazing success and raises funds for scholarships.

Each year Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter focuses on nurturing young men through the Alpha Merit Group Committee, Inc., and their mentoring program. Together Alpha Sigma Lambda and Alpha Merit help young males develop values and principles that allow them to be successful. This objective is achieved by providing positive role models and the information and skills needed for academic success and productive citizenship. Proceeds from the Gala are used to fund scholarships that help young men in their goals of attaining higher education.

At the Gala Awards Ceremony we recognize individuals who serve as great community leaders in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The recipients honored are embodied with leadership, excellence, advocacy and service and in areas such as education, business, government and clergy. Their commitment to service has made a great impact in our communities and the lives of whom we serve. The Gala is named in honor of Bro C.C. Russeau, a long time member of Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter. His work through the years has contributed to much of the Chapter’s success.

MARCH OF DIMES

Over 15,000 people participate in the March of Dimes March for Babies event in Dallas to help all babies- those born healthy and those who need help to survive and thrive. The March of Dimes helps moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. And if something goes wrong, March of Dimes offers information and comfort to families.

The March of Dimes conducts research on the problems that threaten our babies and works to prevent them. The money raised through March for Babies, and other March of Dimes fundraising events, supports lifesaving research, community services, education and advocacy.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter is a proud supporter of the March for Babies. For over a decade, we have been strong supporters of March for Babies, and have raised over $47,000 for the March of Dimes. Historically, the Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter has been one of the top-fundraising chapters.

Not only does Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter participate in fundraising, they have also served on the Advisory Board for walk-day logistics, graciously volunteered their time on walk day to help at the event, and have generously provided food and entertainment to the general public at the event.
